Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has shared video footage showing the aftermath of Ukrainian long-range strikes on a key Russian oil-industry facility in the Moscow region.
According to Zelenskyy, Ukrainian forces targeted an important facility linked to Russia’s oil industry along with a logistics facility during an overnight operation on September 20. He said the strikes involved multiple Ukrainian long-range systems.
The attack reportedly caused a major fire at the Moscow Oil Refinery in the Kapotnya area. Russian officials reported extensive drone activity over Moscow and surrounding areas, while the city’s mayor described the assault as the largest-scale attack on the capital so far.
Zelenskyy said the targeted facilities were important to Russia’s oil and logistics infrastructure. Russian authorities, meanwhile, reported casualties and damage during the wider overnight drone attacks.
The latest strikes come amid continuing long-range attacks between Russia and Ukraine, with energy infrastructure remaining an important part of the conflict.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s long-range strikes had hit one of Russia’s key oil-industry facilities and a logistics facility in the Moscow region. He described the targets as strategically important infrastructure supporting Russia’s war effort.
Russian officials reported that the Moscow Oil Refinery in the Kapotnya district was damaged during the attack, with emergency services responding to a major fire. Ukraine’s General Staff later said several units at the refinery had been damaged, including the AVT-6 crude-oil distillation unit.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Russian air-defence forces intercepted more than 1,600 drones across Russia since Saturday, including around 450 reportedly heading toward Moscow. Russian authorities described the assault as the largest-scale drone attack on the capital to date. Zelenskyy also said the operation involved several Ukrainian long-range systems and credited multiple Ukrainian security and defence units for carrying out the strikes.
The attack comes amid continuing long-range strikes between Russia and Ukraine, with energy and military-related infrastructure increasingly becoming targets. The Moscow refinery has an annual processing capacity of around 12 million tonnes of oil, according to Ukraine’s General Staff.
The latest escalation also coincided with the final day of Russia’s parliamentary elections. Russian officials alleged that the attack was intended to disrupt voting, while Ukrainian officials focused on the military and strategic significance of the targeted facilities.
