The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to finalise the future composition of its senior men’s selection committee following Ajit Agarkar’s decision not to continue as chief selector. Former India spinner Pragyan Ojha could remain in charge on an interim basis as the board considers its next move.
The uncertainty comes after the deadline to apply for the vacant West Zone selector position passed without former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel submitting an application.
Parthiv Patel Stays Out of the Selection Race
Parthiv had been widely discussed as a possible replacement for Agarkar. However, he did not apply for the post before the deadline on October 14, leaving the BCCI to consider other candidates for the West Zone position.
His decision has added uncertainty to the appointment process, with the board now needing to determine how it will fill the vacancy.
Pragyan Ojha Could Continue as Chairman
Ojha, who represents the South Zone on the selection committee, is currently serving as interim chairman. With Parthiv not entering the race, Ojha is positioned to continue in the role for the remainder of his tenure, although the final decision rests with the BCCI.
The committee plays a key role in selecting India’s senior men’s teams across formats and assessing talent from domestic and international cricket.
Ramesh Powar and Sameer Dighe Among Possible Names
Former India spinner Ramesh Powar and ex-wicketkeeper Sameer Dighe have emerged as possible contenders for the vacant West Zone position. Both have previously applied for selector roles, according to reports.
The pool of eligible candidates could remain limited unless the BCCI decides to extend the application deadline or considers additional names.
BCCI May Increase Budget to Attract Candidates
The board is reportedly willing to raise the budget allocated for selectors to attract prominent former cricketers. The move could help bring experienced candidates into the selection setup as India prepares for upcoming international assignments.
The selection committee’s composition is particularly significant with the next ODI World Cup approaching in 2027.
Questions Remain Over the Selection Committee
The BCCI must now decide who will fill the West Zone vacancy and whether any changes will be made to the existing committee. There are also questions over the future of selector Shiv Sundar Das beyond December, while reports suggest that VVS Laxman, head of the BCCI Centre of Excellence, could have a larger role in selection-related discussions.
For now, Ojha’s continuation remains a possibility rather than a formally announced appointment. The BCCI’s final decision will clarify the leadership and composition of India’s senior men’s selection committee.
