Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi interacted with families affected by violent incidents and drug addiction during their visit to Sangrur, Punjab, on November 4, 2026.
The meeting took place during the Congress party’s Insaaf Rally, where affected families described their difficulties and appealed for justice and assistance. The senior leaders listened to their concerns and promised continued support.
Relatives Demand Fair Investigation Into Killings
Among those who met the Congress leadership were family members of Sukhwinder Singh Kalkatta, Gurmel Singh Toot and Parkash Chand from Bathinda.
The relatives of Kalkatta and Toot raised concerns about the investigations into the deaths of their family members. They called for transparent proceedings and strict action against the accused.
Sukhwinder Singh Kalkatta was shot dead in Sehna village in Barnala district in October 2025. Gurmel Singh Toot, who was a Congress leader and former sarpanch, was killed in Patti, Tarn Taran district, in September 2025.
The families urged the authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Kharge and Rahul Gandhi assured them that their concerns would receive attention and that the Congress would continue standing with them.
Family Seeks Rehabilitation Assistance
Another important issue emerged during the interaction with Parkash Chand’s family from Bathinda.
The family explained how a relative’s drug addiction had created serious financial and personal difficulties within the household.
They requested help with rehabilitation, financial assistance and the education of their daughters.
The situation highlighted the wider impact of substance addiction, particularly on families struggling to manage treatment expenses and everyday responsibilities.
Congress Uses Insaaf Rally to Highlight Public Concerns
The interaction formed part of the Congress party’s broader political programme in Sangrur.
The Insaaf Rally focused on concerns surrounding public safety, criminal violence, drug addiction and the demand for justice.
By listening to affected families, Kharge and Gandhi brought attention to issues that extend beyond electoral politics and directly affect ordinary households.
These concerns are also expected to remain part of Punjab’s political discussion as parties prepare for the 2027 Assembly elections.
