The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi has taken steps to address the controversy surrounding a caste-related poster displayed during a student-organised Janmashtami programme on September 4, 2026. The incident triggered concerns over social equality, campus inclusivity and the need for clear guidelines governing student events.
The poster, titled “Bhagavad Gita – The Timeless Wisdom,” referred to the four varnas and described different social roles. One portion describing Shudras as serving “higher classes” drew criticism and led to allegations that the material had casteist implications. Images of the poster circulated on social media, prompting questions about how such material was allowed to be displayed on the IIT Mandi campus.
Following the controversy, IIT Mandi Director Laxmidhar Behera constituted a three-member inquiry committee on September 6 to examine the circumstances surrounding the poster. The institute’s Reservation Cell was also associated with the inquiry process.
According to the committee’s findings reported by The Indian Express and Hindustan Times, the event was not officially organised by IIT Mandi and no recognised student body was involved. The poster had not been reviewed, approved or endorsed by any institute authority. The committee also stated that the content represented an individual student’s interpretation and did not reflect the official position of IIT Mandi.
The inquiry committee reported that it found no evidence of an intention to target, insult or hurt any individual or community. It also concluded that the provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, were not attracted in the case.Instead of disciplinary proceedings, the committee recommended counselling and sensitisation of the students concerned. The student who displayed the poster was identified during the inquiry.
One of the key issues identified by the committee was the absence of a clearly defined procedure for organising such events on campus. The committee recommended that IIT Mandi establish proper rules and guidelines for campus programmes and create a mechanism to oversee events.
The move is aimed at ensuring that student activities are conducted within a framework that respects equality, dignity and social harmony. IIT Mandi has also expressed regret over the controversy and said it empathises with members of the community who felt hurt by the poster.
The IIT Mandi poster controversy has brought renewed attention to the importance of inclusivity and sensitivity within higher educational institutions. While the inquiry did not find evidence of an intention to target a community, the incident has highlighted the need for institutions to have transparent procedures for student-organised programmes.
The proposed guidelines could provide clearer oversight for future campus events while allowing students to participate in cultural, religious and academic activities. IIT Mandi’s response now centres on counselling, sensitisation and the development of clearer event-management procedures, rather than disciplinary action against the students involved. The institute’s stated position is that the controversial poster did not represent its official views.
