Banks to Remain Open on Sunday, September 27 Ahead of Proposed 3-Day Strike

Customers will get an additional opportunity to complete essential banking work as Public Sector Banks (PSBs) and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) will remain open on Sunday, September 27, 2026. The decision has been taken ahead of a proposed three-day nationwide bank strike scheduled from September 28 to 30.

The Ministry of Finance said the move is intended to prevent an extended disruption in banking services. The proposed strike by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) follows the weekend holidays on September 26 and 27.The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the operation of bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests on September 27. This will allow customers to access branch-based services before the proposed strike begins.

Normally, Sunday is a weekly holiday for banks. However, the Finance Ministry said the special working day has been arranged because the proposed strike could otherwise create a prolonged interruption in banking services. With the proposed strike beginning on Monday, September 28, customers who need services requiring physical bank branches can use Sunday to complete their transactions.Banks have also advised customers to make use of digital banking facilities, including internet banking, mobile banking, UPI, ATMs and other self-service channels wherever possible.

The UFBU has called for a three-day nationwide strike from September 28 to September 30, 2026. One of the major demands raised by the unions is implementation of a five-day banking week. Other employee-related issues have also been raised by the unions.

The government and bank managements have appealed to the unions to defer the proposed strike and resolve outstanding issues through discussions. The government has also said that steps are being taken to maintain essential banking services.

Customers who require branch-specific services are advised to plan their banking work before the proposed strike period. These may include document submission, certain account-related requests, cheque-related work and other transactions that require assistance from bank employees.

Digital payment systems and online banking facilities may continue to provide access to routine services, although customers should check their individual bank’s latest advisory for service-specific information.

The proposed strike also coincides with the half-yearly closing of banks on September 30, which makes the period significant for banking and financial operations. For customers, the special Sunday opening on September 27 provides an additional window to complete urgent branch-related banking work before the proposed strike dates.

The situation remains subject to any further developments between bank unions, management and the government. Customers should check official communication from their respective banks for the latest service updates.
