The political dispute over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls intensified on September 28, with Union Minister JP Nadda criticising Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over his allegations concerning the poll panel.
Speaking to reporters, Nadda accused opposition leaders of continuing to raise questions about the Election Commission despite responses from the poll panel. He said repeating an allegation would not establish it as fact and argued that the Election Commission and the courts had addressed the concerns being raised by the Opposition.
Nadda Targets Opposition Leaders
Nadda specifically criticised Rahul Gandhi and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal. He alleged that opposition leaders were creating confusion around constitutional and autonomous institutions.
He also referred to earlier controversies surrounding the SIR exercise and said the Opposition was continuing to raise allegations even after Election Commission members had responded to them. These remarks represent Nadda’s political characterisation of the dispute and the Opposition’s conduct.
Rahul Gandhi’s Earlier Allegations
The latest exchange follows a series of statements by Rahul Gandhi questioning the Election Commission’s handling of electoral rolls and the SIR process.
On September 24, Gandhi called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign and alleged that the electoral process was being compromised. He also referred to reported differences within the three-member Election Commission over aspects of the SIR exercise.
The Election Commission has maintained that decisions concerning the SIR were approved by all three election commissioners.
Congress Continues to Question SIR
The Congress has continued to raise concerns about the electoral-roll revision process. On September 27, the party argued that measures proposed by the Election Commission for deleted or at-risk voters did not adequately address its concerns about the exercise.
The disagreement has therefore developed into a broader political debate over the functioning of the Election Commission, the revision of electoral rolls and the safeguards surrounding voters’ names.
A Continuing Political Dispute
Nadda’s latest comments add another chapter to the ongoing confrontation between the BJP and Congress over the Election Commission and SIR.
While the BJP has defended the poll panel and criticised the Opposition’s allegations, Congress leaders have continued to demand greater scrutiny of the electoral-roll revision process.
