Japan’s Takumi Hojo Wins First Gold Medal of Asian Games 2026 in Triathlon

Japan’s Takumi Hojo won the first gold medal of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026, triumphing in the men’s individual triathlon on September 20. His victory gave the host nation the first gold of the Games.

Hojo completed the triathlon in 52 minutes and 56 seconds, finishing nine seconds ahead of China’s Zhang Xirui, who secured the silver medal. Kazakhstan’s Arlan Zhanabay claimed bronze after finishing a further six seconds behind Zhang.

The men’s individual triathlon featured a 750-metre swim, 20-kilometre cycling leg and 5-kilometre run. Hojo was fourth after the swimming section and moved into fifth during the cycling stage before making his decisive move in the final running segment.

The Japanese athlete eventually pulled clear during the closing stages to secure the first gold medal of the 2026 Asian Games in front of the home crowd.

The victory is another notable achievement for Hojo, who was part of Japan’s gold-medal-winning mixed relay team at the Hangzhou Asian Games three years ago. His Aichi-Nagoya victory also secures a qualification pathway to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Speaking after the race, Hojo said the opening gold had given the Japanese contingent a boost. His victory also marked the beginning of Japan’s medal campaign at an Asian Games being held on home soil.

The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games are being held from September 19 to October 4, 2026, with athletes from across Asia competing in dozens of sports. The 2026 edition features 43 sports and several new additions to the Asian Games programme.

The race also highlighted the competitive nature of Asian triathlon, with the leading athletes separated by only a small margin at the finish. Hojo’s ability to remain competitive through all three stages proved decisive in the final result.
