AMD to Buy Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs in $8.2 Billion AI Deal

AMD is set to acquire World Labs, the artificial intelligence startup co-founded by computer scientist Fei-Fei Li, in a deal valued at about $8.2 billion. The all-stock transaction is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

Why World Labs Matters

World Labs focuses on spatial intelligence and world models. Its technology is designed to help AI systems understand, generate and simulate three-dimensional environments using inputs such as text, images and video.

AMD’s Physical AI Push

The acquisition could help AMD expand beyond traditional AI computing into emerging applications such as robotics, simulation and physical AI. World Labs’ research could also give AMD greater insight into the computing requirements of next-generation AI models.

Fei-Fei Li Joins AMD

Following the deal, Fei-Fei Li will become AMD’s executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to CEO Lisa Su. Li is widely recognised for her work in computer vision and for helping develop ImageNet, a major visual dataset that influenced modern AI research.

What It Could Mean for AI

The deal highlights the growing focus on AI systems that can interact with the physical world rather than only process text, images or video. World-model technology could eventually support areas such as robotics and virtual simulations, although the practical applications are still developing.
