Tensions in the Middle East remain elevated following a missile attack targeting Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, which has been attributed to the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Saudi Response and Interception
The Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis stated that its air defenses successfully intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired toward Riyadh at dawn.
Coalition spokesperson Major General Turki al-Maliki said the Houthis also attempted to target civilians and civilian infrastructure in the cities of Bisha, Taif, Farasan, and Yanbu. All those attempts were thwarted by Saudi air defenses.
Saudi authorities reported no casualties or significant damage from the intercepted missile aimed at the capital. However, a fire broke out on an Aramco fuel tank near King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, and a large plume of black smoke was visible. Temporary flight disruptions and delays were reported at the airport.
This marked the first air-raid alert sounded in Riyadh since the latest escalation of fighting between Saudi forces and the Houthis began earlier in 2026.
US Warning of Rapid Escalation
The United States issued a cautionary alert. The US State Department warned Americans in the Middle East that “the security environment remains complex with the potential for unforeseen escalation.” It advised heightened vigilance and awareness of possible flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions.
