AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has written to Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy proposing that the revived Mamnoor Airport in Warangal be named after freedom fighter Moulvi Syed Alauddin.
The proposal comes in response to the Chief Minister’s recent invitation seeking public suggestions for a suitable name for the airport, which is being developed to improve air connectivity to the Warangal region.
Historical Significance of the Airport
In his letter, Owaisi noted that Mamnoor Airport was originally built in the 1930s during the reign of the Nizam of Hyderabad. It is among the oldest airports in India and was constructed to facilitate the paper industry and support industrial establishments such as the Azam Jahi Mills in Warangal.
The airport is now being revived and expanded after land acquisition and handover to the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
Owaisi highlighted that Moulvi Syed Alauddin was a native of the undivided Warangal district and a prominent figure associated with Hyderabad’s resistance to British rule during the 1857 uprising (First War of Independence).
Along with Turrebaz Khan, he led the historic resistance against the British Residency in Hyderabad on July 17, 1857. He was subsequently captured and imprisoned in the Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
“His contribution represents an important chapter in the history of Hyderabad and the freedom struggle in South India,” Owaisi stated. He added that naming the airport after Alauddin would serve as a fitting tribute to his courage and sacrifice and help ensure that the legacy of this “largely unsung freedom fighter” is remembered by future generations.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had recently announced that land for the project had been acquired and invited suggestions from the public on a name for the new airport. Owaisi welcomed this invitation and formally submitted his proposal for “Moulvi Syed Alauddin Airport, Warangal.
”The suggestion has drawn attention as one of the early public recommendations following the Chief Minister’s call. The final decision on the name will rest with the state government and relevant authorities.
The development of Mamnoor Airport is expected to enhance regional connectivity and support economic growth in Warangal and surrounding areas of Telangana.
