The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain warning for several parts of Telangana as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal influences weather conditions across the state.
The system, located over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, is expected to cross the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast near Kalingapatnam (between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur) during the night of September 23 or early hours of September 24, 2026. This is set to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy falls, particularly over eastern and northeastern districts.
September 23 (Day 1): Orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, and Hanumakonda. Thunderstorms with lightning and squally winds (45–55 kmph, gusting to 65 kmph) are also likely in these and several other districts. Yellow alerts cover additional areas including Adilabad, Mancherial, and parts of southern Telangana.
September 24 (Day 2): Red alert for very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in Komuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, and Bhadradri Kothagudem. Orange alert continues for Adilabad, Jagtial, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Warangal, and Hanumakonda, with similar thunderstorm and wind warnings.
Widespread moderate to heavy rainfall is expected across much of the state, with the heaviest impact concentrated in the eastern districts close to the Chhattisgarh border. Some isolated locations could receive 150–200 mm or more during the peak period. Hyderabad and surrounding areas are likely to see intermittent moderate spells, which may cause waterlogging in low-lying zones.
Impacts and Advisories
Authorities have warned of possible flash floods, waterlogging, and disruptions to road and rail traffic, especially in already saturated areas. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds pose additional risks. Residents in alerted districts are advised to:
Avoid unnecessary travel during intense rain spells.
Stay away from low-lying areas, rivers, and streams.
Follow official updates from IMD and the Telangana State Disaster Response and Fire Services Department.
Secure loose outdoor objects and ensure drainage systems are clear.
The rainfall activity is expected to remain significant through September 24–25 before gradually easing in subsequent days, though isolated heavy falls may continue in some areas.
The system is also bringing heavy rain to coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely as the depression moves inland.
