The Punjab Health Department has directed all government and private hospitals across the state to establish dedicated flu corners for screening patients with influenza-like illness (ILI). The move comes as the state witnesses a rise in H1N1 (swine flu) cases.
According to health department data, around 350 confirmed H1N1 cases were reported in Punjab between January and September 2026. Cases remained in single digits monthly from January to July but began rising from August. Two suspected deaths linked to the infection have also been reported.
More recent figures indicate approximately 1,926 Category-C suspected cases and about 347 confirmed positive cases, with Ludhiana recording the highest numbers, followed by Patiala, Mohali (SAS Nagar), and Jalandhar. One death each has been reported in Ludhiana and Jalandhar.
The directions have been issued under the Punjab Prevention and Control of Influenza A H1N1 and H3N2 Regulations, 2026. Key instructions to hospitals include:
Setting up dedicated flu corners to screen patients presenting with ILI symptoms.
Following the categorisation of ILI cases as per guidelines issued by the Government of India, National Health Mission, and the Punjab Health Department for testing and treatment.
Reporting all ILI cases to the Civil Surgeon of the respective district as soon as they are detected.
Reporting confirmed cases of Influenza A H1N1 and H3N2 to the concerned Civil Surgeon.
The flu corners aim to ensure early detection, reduce the risk of transmission within hospital OPDs, and facilitate timely treatment. Health authorities have stressed that the current strain appears mild in most cases and hospitalisation is generally not required for the majority of patients.
Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh has advised the public not to panic while urging people to follow respiratory etiquette, seek medical help if symptoms persist, and take preventive measures.
Residents are advised to watch for symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, and difficulty breathing, and to visit the nearest flu corner or health facility for screening if needed.
