US President Donald Trump has announced a new security agreement involving the United States, Denmark and Greenland, claiming that Washington will have permanent control over Greenland’s security and other defence-related needs. The announcement comes after months of tensions over Trump’s repeated calls for greater US control of the strategically located Arctic territory.
According to reports, the proposed agreement would allow the United States to expand its military presence in Greenland and strengthen its ability to respond to security threats in the Arctic. The arrangement would also restrict non-NATO adversaries from establishing military bases or making certain sensitive investments on the island.
However, the announcement does not mean that Greenland is being transferred to the United States. Greenland remains an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Danish and Greenlandic officials have said the agreement recognizes the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination.
The agreement is expected to be formally signed during the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week, although parliamentary procedures in Denmark and Greenland still have to be completed.
Greenland’s location makes it strategically important for Arctic security, military surveillance and North Atlantic defence. The United States already maintains a military presence at Pituffik Space Base, and the new arrangement could provide a framework for a broader American security role on the island.
The development marks a significant shift from the earlier dispute over Trump’s proposals to acquire Greenland. The current agreement instead focuses on security cooperation and military access while keeping Greenland under Danish and Greenlandic sovereignty.
