Indian mixed martial artist Suchika Tariyal created history at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, assuring India of its first-ever medal in MMA after advancing to the semifinals of the women’s Traditional 60kg event.
Tariyal defeated Mongolia’s Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2-0 in the quarterfinal on Sunday. Her victory secured a place in the last four, where she is guaranteed at least a bronze medal because both losing semifinalists receive bronze medals.
The achievement is particularly significant because MMA is making its Asian Games debut at Aichi-Nagoya 2026. Tariyal therefore becomes India’s first Asian Games MMA medallist, marking a new chapter for the sport in the country.
Tariyal’s quarterfinal was closely contested, with Baigalmaa attempting to fight back strongly in the second round. The Indian athlete maintained her composure and produced a crucial reversal before controlling the contest until the end to secure the 2-0 victory.
The 36-year-old athlete has competed across multiple combat sports during her career. She has represented India in judo, kurash, jiu-jitsu and MMA, building experience across different disciplines. She also competed in judo at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and became a jiu-jitsu world champion in 2024.
Her journey to the Asian Games MMA podium has therefore been built over several years. After moving through judo and jiu-jitsu, Tariyal returned to MMA and continued competing at national and international levels before earning her place in India’s Asian Games squad.
Tariyal’s semifinal is scheduled for Monday, where she will have the opportunity to progress to the gold-medal bout. Regardless of the semifinal result, her quarterfinal victory has already guaranteed her a medal.
Tariyal’s achievement is India’s first-ever Asian Games medal in MMA, not India’s first overall medal at the 2026 Asian Games. India had already opened its medal account in shooting, with the women’s 10m air rifle team winning silver earlier on Sunday.
