IIT Madras Partners with Bechtel to Establish State-of-the-Art Construction Robotics Laboratory.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has taken a major step toward advancing automation in the construction sector by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global engineering giant Bechtel Corporation. The collaboration aims to establish a state-of-the-art Construction Robotics Laboratory on the IIT Madras campus.

The new facility is designed to support cutting-edge research, technology development, and stronger collaboration between academia and industry in the fields of robotics and automation applied to construction and infrastructure projects.

According to the official announcement from IIT Madras’ Office of Alumni and Corporate Relations, the initiative will:

Set up a dedicated construction robotics research laboratory equipped for advanced experimentation.

Enable hands-on learning and real-world problem-solving for students and researchers.

Provide curriculum inputs, mentorship, and technology demonstrations.

Create internship and live project opportunities with Bechtel.

Accelerate research and development of next-generation construction solutions tailored for India.

The partnership combines IIT Madras’ strong research expertise in robotics, automation, and civil engineering with Bechtel’s more than 127 years of global experience in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) across seven continents.

Why Construction Robotics Matters

India’s construction industry is rapidly expanding to meet the demands of urbanization, infrastructure development, and large-scale projects under initiatives such as Make in India. Introducing robotics and automation can improve productivity, enhance worker safety, reduce costs, and address labour challenges on complex sites.

The new laboratory is expected to focus on practical applications such as automated construction processes, robotic systems for building and infrastructure work, and innovative technologies that can be scaled for Indian conditions.

Signing Ceremony

The MoU was signed in the presence of senior leaders from both sides, including Mr. Vikas Joshi (Senior Vice President & Partner, Bechtel Group, and Manager of EPC Functions – USA), Mr. Raja Yeluri (Manager, India Offices, Bechtel), Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam (Dean – Alumni and Corporate Relations, IIT Madras), and Mr. Kaviraj Nair (CEO, Office of Institutional Advancement, IIT Madras).

This collaboration is seen as an important milestone that will give students and researchers global exposure while strengthening India’s capabilities in construction robotics and industrial innovation.

As the laboratory takes shape, it is expected to become a hub for interdisciplinary research involving faculty and students from civil engineering, mechanical engineering, robotics, and related fields, ultimately contributing to safer, faster, and more efficient construction practices across the country.
