Gujarat Congress Seeks Police Review, Claims Opposition Faces Unequal Treatment

A memorandum submitted to DGP Vikas Sahay calls for complaints involving alleged political pressure to be examined.

GANDHINAGAR  Gujarat Congress leaders have asked the state police chief to examine complaints they say point to politically influenced policing and unequal treatment of opposition members. The party held a protest on October 26 and submitted a memorandum to Director General of Police Vikas Sahay, seeking an impartial review of the matters raised.

The demonstration was led by Gujarat Congress president Amit Chavda and Congress Legislature Party leader Tushar Chaudhary, along with party workers and representatives. Chavda alleged that law-enforcement agencies were facing political pressure and claimed that people critical of the government could be branded anti-national or face legal action. The allegations have not been established as official findings in the supplied material.

Chavda also sought scrutiny of allegations involving disproportionate assets among police officers and questioned whether the state police were acting independently. Chaudhary raised separate concerns about local body elections, alleging that some Congress candidates encountered obstacles during nomination and campaigning, including pressure to withdraw. These claims require independent verification.

The delegation asked the DGP to investigate the complaints and take appropriate steps if misconduct is established. Its appeal places the conduct of the police administration at the centre of a political dispute between Congress and the ruling BJP.

A transparent response from the police leadership could help clarify which allegations are supported by evidence and whether further action is warranted. Until then, the claims remain allegations made by Congress leaders rather than proven conclusions.
