The Congress has questioned the government’s approach to discussing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls after Union Home Minister Amit Shah invited Rahul Gandhi to participate in a debate during a proposed special session of Parliament.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh responded by saying that the Opposition’s concerns should receive attention before the government proceeds with the proposed discussion. The disagreement has brought the Election Commission and voter-list revision back into the national political debate.
Ramesh Challenges the Centre’s Earlier Position
Jairam Ramesh referred to the government’s position during the previous Monsoon Session, when it maintained that SIR was an issue falling under the Election Commission’s authority.
He questioned why the Home Minister was now offering a parliamentary debate on the same subject. According to Ramesh, the government’s position needed clarification in view of its earlier response to the Opposition’s demand for discussion.
Congress Wants SIR Exercise Put on Hold
The Congress has called for the suspension of the ongoing voter-list revision exercise.
Party leaders have argued that the process requires greater transparency and raised concerns about the possibility of eligible voters being affected. They have also demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over what they describe as shortcomings in the Election Commission’s handling of the issue.
These demands reflect the Congress party’s position and are not established findings of wrongdoing.
Delimitation Proposals Raise Additional Questions
The disagreement is not limited to SIR. Ramesh also expressed concerns about the government’s proposed delimitation Bills.
He said opposition parties should receive complete details of the proposals before being expected to participate in discussions. The Congress leader also called for an all-party meeting to examine the proposals and their possible consequences.
Amit Shah Offers to Convene Special Session
Shah had challenged Rahul Gandhi to discuss SIR, EVMs and allegations of electoral irregularities in Parliament.
Speaking at a BJP march in Hyderabad, the Home Minister said the government was prepared to convene a special parliamentary session. He also criticised the INDIA bloc’s recent Delhi rally and questioned the Opposition’s claims about the electoral process.
Shah referred to Congress victories in different states while challenging its criticism of electronic voting machines.
Debate Over Electoral Accountability Continues
The latest exchange highlights the difference between the government’s willingness to discuss electoral issues and the Congress’s demand for prior action on its concerns.
While the BJP has defended SIR and invited the Opposition to debate the matter, Congress leaders continue to seek a suspension of the exercise and accountability from the Election Commission.
The possibility of a special session remains uncertain, leaving the dispute over electoral-roll revision and delimitation unresolved.
