Meira Kumar is expected to chair the symbolic event as opposition leaders prepare a larger Delhi mobilisation
A public show of opposition
Opposition parties in the INDIA bloc are preparing a public programme in New Delhi centred on their criticism of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Scheduled for October 30 at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, the event is designed as a symbolic, impeachment-style proceeding rather than a formal constitutional process.
Senior leaders assigned central roles
Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar is expected to preside over the programme. Kharge is set to introduce the motion, while Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, is expected to deliver the concluding address. Leaders from other INDIA bloc parties are also expected to put forward their views.
Voter-list revision drives the dispute
The opposition’s concerns are focused on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Congress and its allies have alleged that the exercise could lead to eligible voters being removed from the lists and have called for greater transparency. These claims are disputed and remain part of the political disagreement over the Election Commission’s work.
Opposition coordination ahead of the event
Preparatory discussions were held at Kharge’s residence on October 29. Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh and K C Venugopal took part, alongside Meira Kumar. Representatives of the Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and CPI(M) were also involved in the discussions.
A wider campaign is planned
The October 30 programme is linked to an INDIA bloc rally scheduled at Ramlila Maidan on November 1. Opposition parties are coordinating with their state units to bring supporters to Delhi and press their demand for more transparent electoral procedures.
