Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday paid tributes to the legendary Hindi poet and national poet (Rashtrakavi) Ramdhari Singh Dinkar on his birth anniversary. September 23 marks the 118th birth anniversary of the Padma Bhushan awardee, freedom fighter and towering figure of modern Hindi literature.

In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi offered his deepest respects to Dinkar, describing him as a national poet whose fiery poems continue to inspire the nation.
“On the birth anniversary of the National Poet Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, I offer my deepest respects to him a hundredfold. His fiery poems, brimming with the sentiments of public awakening and national pride, continue to infuse valour, vigour, and self-respect into the hearts of the countrymen even today. His works not only enrich literature but also inspire devotion to the motherland. His towering personality and timeless creations will guide generations of Indians for ages to come,” the Prime Minister said.
Lok Sabha Speaker’s Homage
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also paid tributes, highlighting Dinkar’s unique place in Hindi literature. He noted that Dinkar was not merely a great poet but a litterateur whose pen gave voice to the nation’s consciousness, public sentiments and social concerns.
Birla specifically recalled timeless works such as Rashmirathi, Kurukshetra, Urvashi, Renuka and Four Chapters of Indian Culture, stating that these creations have enriched Hindi literature and offered a fresh perspective on Indian society and national thought. He added that Dinkar’s immortal literary legacy will continue to inspire Indian literature and national reflection.

Born on September 23, 1908, in Bihar, Ramdhari Singh ‘Dinkar’ emerged as one of the most prominent modern Hindi poets. Known for his nationalist poetry written during the pre-independence era, his style is marked by veer rasa (heroic sentiment) and patriotic fervour. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan and is widely revered as Rashtrakavi for the powerful expression of national pride and social consciousness in his writings.
Other leaders, including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, also paid homage, describing Dinkar as a pinnacle figure of Hindi literature whose fearless pen awakened national pride and strengthened India’s cultural values.
