Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay returned to Chennai on September 17 after completing a six-day official visit to London. The visit focused on attracting investments and strengthening Tamil Nadu’s industrial and technology sectors.
According to the Tamil Nadu government, investment commitments announced during the visit were worth ₹15,300 crore, with the proposed projects expected to support employment and industrial development.
During the UK visit, Vijay also visited Silverstone as part of discussions around the possibility of developing a world-class motorsports city in Tamil Nadu.
A planned meeting with members of the Tamil community in London was cancelled after local authorities raised public-safety concerns.
During the London visit, the Tamil Nadu government announced investment commitments of around ₹15,300 crore, with the proposed projects expected to generate more than 10,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. The agreements covered sectors including automobile components, research and development, renewable energy, power infrastructure and Global Capability Centres.
The visit also included discussions around technology and services. EY announced plans for a Global Capability Centre in Chennai, while Sigma Technology Group planned an expansion in Chennai and Tiruchirappalli. Wilson Power Solutions also announced a proposed investment in Tiruvallur.
Another major part of the visit was Vijay’s visit to the Silverstone Motor Racing Circuit. He reviewed the circuit’s facilities and safety systems as part of Tamil Nadu’s proposed plans for a Motor Sports City. He also flagged off the 2026 Michelin Le Mans Cup race, in which actor and racer Ajith Kumar participated.
The London trip also included meetings related to UK–Tamil Nadu trade opportunities, aerospace and defence cooperation, textile and jewellery sourcing, and skill-development partnerships.
A planned interaction with members of the Tamil diaspora in London was cancelled after police raised public-safety concerns. The development attracted political reactions in Tamil Nadu, with opposition parties questioning aspects of the visit and the investment claims, while the state government highlighted the announced commitments and proposed employment opportunities.
