The BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) has authorised the Board’s office-bearers to take a decision on Ajit Agarkar’s future as chairman of the senior men’s selection committee. The decision was taken during the BCCI’s 95th AGM in Mumbai on September 18, 2026.
Agarkar’s current tenure as chairman of the senior selection committee is approaching its end, with reports putting the contract expiry date at October 4. The AGM did not announce a final decision on whether Agarkar would continue or whether the BCCI would begin the process of appointing a replacement.
BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla confirmed after the meeting that the office-bearers had been given authority to take decisions concerning the selection committees. This leaves the next step regarding Agarkar’s position with the Board’s office-bearers.
Ajit Agarkar was appointed chairman of the senior men’s selection committee in July 2023. Since then, the selection panel has overseen several major phases of Indian cricket, including the 2023 ODI World Cup, the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy.
As his contract approaches its reported end date, the BCCI is now considering the future structure of the selection committee. Recent reports have also indicated that the Board is preparing for a possible succession process. However, the official decision on the next chairman has not been announced.
The BCCI AGM also discussed changes to the junior selection setup. According to reports, the Board is looking to fill all five positions on the junior selection committee.
The AGM was attended by representatives from BCCI-affiliated state associations, including senior cricket administrators and former players. The meeting also covered other administrative matters related to Indian cricket.
For now, Ajit Agarkar’s continuation or replacement remains a matter for the BCCI office-bearers to decide. Any final announcement regarding the senior selection committee is expected through the Board’s official channels.
