Bengaluru, Delhi Among World’s Top Innovation Clusters in 2026 Ranking

India’s growing innovation ecosystem has received another global spotlight, with Bengaluru and Delhi featuring among the world’s top 30 innovation clusters in the 2026 Global Innovation Index (GII).

The ranking, released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), evaluates major innovation hubs using indicators including international patent filings, scientific publications and venture capital activity.

Bengaluru Ranks 25th, Delhi 27th

Bengaluru secured the 25th position, while Delhi ranked 27th among the world’s 100 leading innovation clusters. Both cities, however, slipped slightly compared with the previous ranking.

India has four clusters in the global top 100. Mumbai ranked 43rd and Chennai 79th, with both cities improving their positions.

Top Innovation Hubs Worldwide

The Shenzhen Hong Kong Guangzhou cluster retained the top spot for the second consecutive year. Tokyo Yokohama came second, followed by San Jose–San Francisco, Beijing and Seoul.

The top 10 also include Shanghai Suzhou, New York City, London, Boston Cambridge and Osaka Kobe Kyoto.

India’s Innovation Network Expands

WIPO’s ranking highlights how innovation clusters bring together universities, researchers, startups, inventors, investors and research institutions. India’s four featured clusters show that innovation activity is developing across multiple major cities rather than being concentrated in one location.

Bengaluru remains India’s leading cluster, while Mumbai and Chennai recorded notable gains in the latest ranking.

A Look At India’s Global Position

The GII 2026 findings also place India among the countries with a significant presence in the global innovation-cluster landscape. The results underline the growing role of Indian cities in technology, research, entrepreneurship and venture capital.

For Bengaluru and Delhi, their top-30 positions offer another indication of India’s expanding footprint in the global innovation economy.
