IndiGo Raises Fuel Charges as Jet Fuel Costs Surge

India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has announced higher fuel charges for both domestic and international flights as rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices put pressure on airline operating costs.

The revised charges will apply to new bookings made from October 6, 2026, and are expected to increase the overall cost of air travel for passengers.

Domestic Flight Charges Revised

For domestic routes, IndiGo has revised its fuel surcharge according to flight distance. The charges will range from ₹375 for flights up to 500 km to ₹1,300 for journeys exceeding 2,000 km.

The airline said the latest month-on-month rise in fuel prices has exceeded 14%, pushing ATF costs to among their highest levels in the past decade.

International Flights Also Affected

Fuel charges have also been revised on international routes. Charges will vary by destination, with higher surcharges applying to several regions.

The revised international charges range from ₹1,000 to ₹10,000, depending on the destination and route.

Why Is IndiGo Increasing the Charges?

ATF is a major component of airline operating expenses. IndiGo said the continuing increase in fuel prices has affected its cost structure and network economics.

The airline described the latest adjustment as a relatively modest recalibration, saying a larger increase would have been required to fully offset the rise in fuel costs.

What It Means for Travellers

The new fuel charges mean passengers booking IndiGo flights from October 6 are likely to pay more, although the actual increase will depend on the route and ticket structure.

The move also highlights the wider pressure facing airlines as volatile global fuel prices feed into aviation costs. For travellers, sustained increases in ATF could translate into higher airfares if fuel costs remain elevated.
