The proposed panel is expected to advise on major issues, while the chief minister is set to retain final decision-making authority
BENGALURU The Karnataka Congress is preparing to establish a Political Affairs Committee aimed at improving coordination between the state government and the party organisation amid discussion about leadership roles and decision-making.
Consultative, not an alternative authority Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara has said the committee will serve as a consultative body rather than an independent centre of power. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is expected to retain the final say on decisions, while the panel can discuss important political and policy questions and offer recommendations.
Who may be included Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president B. K. Hariprasad has confirmed that the committee is expected to be formed soon. Proposed members include the chief minister, the state party president, former Congress Legislature Party leaders and other senior party functionaries.
How the panel may work Parameshwara said members would be able to express their views, but Siddaramaiah would decide whether to accept or reject their suggestions. He also indicated that the chief minister could consult the Congress high command when necessary.
Party coordination is the stated goal Congress leaders have rejected suggestions that the committee would interfere in routine administration. Hariprasad said similar political affairs committees exist in other states, including Himachal Pradesh and Jharkhand.
Its impact will depend on implementation The proposed panel is intended to provide a regular forum for discussion between party leaders and the government. Its eventual membership, working arrangements and ability to build consensus will determine whether it improves coordination as Karnataka Congress prepares for future electoral challenges.
